"When progesterone levels fall as a result of ovarian follicle failure (lack ofovulation), the body responds by increasing it's production of the adrenal corticalsteroid, androstenedione, an alternative precursor for the production of other adrenalcortical hormones. Androstenedione conveys some androgenic (male-like) properties, in thiscase, male pattern hair loss. When progesterone levels are raised by progesteronesupplements, the androstenedione level will gradually fall, and your normal hair growthwill eventually resume. Since hair growth is a slow process, it may take 4-6 months forthe effects to become apparent."

The above quote is from Dr. John Lee's book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You AboutMenopause.
